Launching New Single at Sydney Opera House on St. Patricks Day

Lets_dance_-_single_-_fb_promo

My new single 'LET'S DANCE' will be launched at The Sydney Opera House on St. Patrick's Day, Sunday 17th March via iTunes when I open for superb Irish singer-songwriter talent Damien Dempsey. The song challenges the negative media that we are bombarded by everyday in newspapers and on TV news...it's amazing how many tragic and negative stories get shoved on to us...but we can't forget all the beautiful and wonderful things that are happening too. As a kid, I remember at school learning about war, after war, and then watching the news as the 1st Gulf War happened...it seemed to me even then that we are constantly in war so we have to choose how we want our psyche to be affected. (It's a precious place).

We can choose who we wanna be. For myself, after leaving school, I went on to study and get a 1st class honours in Polymer Engineering ...started working in the industry...got depression...looked at my life...I wasn't happy...so I quit... changed my life...one of the things I did was pick up the guitar and taught myself to sing and play, one year later I started writing songs (after meeting the love of my life) ...I chose to do something different, something that i felt made me happier and contributed to the world, and my world, in more fulfilling way than when I was an engineer and making ink cartridges for Hewlett Packard ....ten years later I'm playing The Sydney Opera House. It blows me away even still where this 'Choice' I made is taking me...I chose to be a full time singer-songwriter...

A lot of us have the possibility and circumstances to choose a life...how lucky we are to have that choice...please choose wisely ...it's your life

The Bucket List! - Damien Dempsey Oz Tour support by Mick McHugh

Mick_and_damien2

I will be ticking two dreams off my "Bucket List" next month when I open for another one of my songwriting heroes Damien Dempsey on his Australian Tour, and I'll be opening for Damien at The Sydney Opera House....how cool! When I think back to first picking up the guitar at 23 with the intention to play a few cover songs at parties with mates, and where I am now, it's a magical journey that just keeps surprising even me...I love it.

Damien Dempsey mixes traditional Irish folk with contemporary lyrics to deliver gut wrenching honest social commentary on the positive and negative aspects of Ireland, while also empowering people through his lyrics. To be at one of live concerts is an unbelievable experience, and a credit to his songwriting, as the crowd will sing every word of his songs...sometimes to the point where you almost can't hear Damien. I love Shane MacGowan's (The Pogues) description of Damien, "Damien describes things the way they really are... which is a pile of sh*t... but then he also sees the beauty that is Ireland's past and can be Ireland's future".

Not surprisingly, Damien credits Bob Marley as one of the big influence on his life and musical career. You can hear the similarity in the truth of their lyrics.

"I was in my teens and I was going through a bit of a phase, drinking a lot and doing E tablets and getting into street fighting and getting depressed. Then I'd listen to Marley and it lifted me out of it. I'd like to try and do the same for kids, that my music would give them a bit of hope and strength, and they'd know that I was telling the truth and I wouldn't lie to them."

—Damien Dempsey[2]

Damien Dempsey tours Australia March 2013 - 15 Perth, 16 Melb, 17 Sydney, 26 Darwin, 27 Carins, 28 Brisbane, 31 Byron Bay Bluesfest.

Nearly All Irish Show

I'm delighted to announce a new show that I've developed with another Irish ex-pat, Jack O'Leary from Cork, and a very good Ozzie musician mate, Peter Miller from The Gold Coast, who has toured to Ireland regularly.... and he's the "nearly" bit!...other than that..we're "all Irish!"
The official description/press release is below, but basically the show is an opportunity for us to reach audiences with an authentic Irish musical experience...not necessarily singing the songs that we are so often expected to sing in the pub scene.. but songs that are close to our hearts as contemporary Irish artist. We take our audiences on a journey of Ireland through our experiences...emigrating, sadness and joy, the madness, the drink, laughing at yourself, love and loss... all sewn together with honest acoustic style music, singing and percussion.

We are performing the show once a month. The first show was at Uki Hall last month, and it was really well received. The second show will be tonight at Tallebugerra Hall (Gold Coast hinterland near Currumbin), and then next month will be in the hills of Byron. It's a great cultural experience, BYO, sit back and we'll whisk you away to The Emerald Isle and back.
Here's the Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/NearlyAllIrish

Tickets for the Tallebudgerra Hall gig available from http://www.kjpromo.com.au

The ‘NEARLY ALL IRISH’ Show
Through song, story and music, The 'Nearly All Irish' show brings to the stage the traditional themes and rhythms of Ireland’s rich culture.

From a land that has touched the hearts of millions across the globe comes a show that has grown out of the experience of two Irish emigrants moving to Australia and an Australian born and bred who has fallen in love with Ireland. Bringing together different interpretations and insights in to a land 10,000 miles away, this is a show that captures the heart of Ireland by depicting it in the midst of the vast landscape of Australia. Three well seasoned musicians capture in music, song and story the beautiful and mystical magic of a country that has sent a message across the world of a unique land full of mystery, legends, music and verse. Songs and stories portraying Ireland quintessence – from emigration to the madness, the drink to the fairies – this show will take you on a journey into the heartland of a contemporary and traditional Irish culture.
The three musicians, Jack O’Leary from Cork, Mick McHugh from Dublin and Peter Miller from the Gold Coast are excited to bring to you this unique show combining each of their personal Emerald Isle stories and music to give their audiences an authentic Irish experience. Whether you are of Irish ancestry, love the Irish brogue, or just love a great night of music and craic - don’t miss this one of a kind show.

I'll be performing at Splendour on Saturday 28th July. Bluesfest in April...Ralph McTell tour in May...it's so rewarding to keep landing these great gigs for all the hard work and dedication I've given to this journey since turning full-time 5 years ago. Thanks as always to everyone who's a part of this journey
